Escape into Reality
02:54
|
|||
Welcome to reality
You were once just a thought inside my mind
Now you're in the universe
And you can be interpreted in many different ways
No one knows how long you will be around
So make use of the time you have while you're here

Mirror-Touch
03:32
|
|||
I've walked in so many shoes
I could feel almost everything down to their souls
Is there only one way to be?
Is there another iteration of who I am?
If I were born anywhere else
Would I still cherish the same things that I do now?
Is there only one way to see?
Do the same rose colored glasses work for everyone else?
What did the world hole see?
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Did Mandela die in prison?
What did the whole world see?
Magic mirror on the wall
Did Madiba die of infection?
I've walked down so many roads
I've learned to cut through the forks to make my own path
Is there only one way to go?
Is there some value in wandering to "nowhere"?
If I could be anyone else
Would I inherit a brand new set of problems?
Is there only one way to grow?
Do the same set of lessons teach everyone else?
What did the world hole see?
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Did they marry in Yumiura?
What did the whole world see?
Magic mirror on the wall
Did they ever really meet there?
What we need is empathy
Like a mirror-touch synesthete
Contagious emotions spread
Through our mirror neurons

A Mind of My Own
05:00
|
|||
I have racing thoughts
But I can't bet on the winner
When they're on their mark, get set and go
I have many thoughts
Some are unpredictable
Swirling like a storm before it breaks
Someday, I believe I will have
A mind of my own
You may want to program thinking
Just leave mine alone
Which actions are learned?
Do I have my own instincts?
Who knows if my slate was ever clean?
What have I been taught?
Can I remember my teacher?
A blind teacher can't see their pupils

Planned Obsolescence
04:19
|
|||
This was once my favorite toy
But now they say it's obsolete
This was once my favorite game
But now they say it's obsolete
This was once my favorite show
But now they say it's obsolete
Everything has been replaced
Or occupies a different space
Take away the things I love
And show me what to get rid of
Clear some space for something new
And read about the next breakthrough
Throw out all this useless junk
Or hide it in a buried trunk
I don't care if there's a fee
Just shut up and take my money
This was once my favorite phone
But now they say it's obsolete
This was once my favorite store
But now they say it's obsolete
This was once my favorite job
But now they say it's obsolete
Everything has been replaced
Or occupies a different space
I can't wait to see what's next
I'm sure it will be better
Than the ones that they made just last year
I doubt they rushed to release it
My life will greatly improve
With this new modern miracle
For now, I'll accept any bugs
They'll have them fixed by next year

Stuck in My Head
04:42
|
|||
One day, on my way home
My mind drifted into the unknown
I'm not sure where it came from
But out of nowhere, I began to hum
Call it humsickness or earworms
All I know is that it's stuck in my head
Like a tune wedgy
Call it melodymania
All I know is that it's stuck in my head
Like an itch inside my brain
Then later that same day
As I pulled into my driveway
The broken record played
And began to thoroughly pervade
When it was time for bed
Just as my pillow touched my head
I started to fall asleep
Until that melody began to creep

The Mansion Family
03:32
|
|||
During the Summer of Greed, a new guru appeared
To show us how we are meant to live
Hatred is all the rage to a populist
Scapegoats will sometimes eat canned applause
Everyone knows we make our best decisions when
We are feeling angry and afraid
The audience of Dunning–Kruger was in full effect
Whatever they believed was now the "best"
If we all decide to calm down
And start thinking through things in rational ways
We would never learn not to love
A large part of the fear
That motivates us to turn against the world
Is we don't want to cease to exist
He would not be our first choice, that we can tell you
We're desperate to end the status quo
All of the flyover states were now in full swing
Eventually, the pendulum comes back
Christ-inspired legislation will put lepers on the
Endangered Pre-Existing Condition Act
The anosognosia of everyday life will
Keep the cycle of violence alive

Etic Kit
03:38
|
|||
In my mind is a kennel of rescue dogs from Pavlov's lab
I've been trained to do some tricks so that I could fool myself forever
Someone teach my rescue dogs to sniff out what makes them drool
So that I can see what I was spoonfed by the outside world
I will be the silent observer
Swearing not to interfere
Each time I see a pattern emerge
It will be less likely to occur
In my heart is a better life where I can choose how I'll react
When someone decides to push one of my hot buttons

Captain General
04:40
|
|||
We are in a war
With reality
We must be saved from the truth
Something must be done
Let's propose something
Then say that it must be done
Give us a broad brush
To paint a vague picture
Of a polarizing scene
Give an argument
From your own authority
Turning the tables in a game of musical chairs
Will make it seem like it was your question...not theirs
And when you challenge someone's right to even ask
Getting an answer becomes a much harder task
In ordinary conversation
Speakers and hearers cooperate
All you have to do is keep in mind
All four of the Gricean norms
If you violate any of them
Then it will seem like deception
Make sure your communication has
Info in the right quantity
And be of truthful quality
Deliver appropriately
And, of course, relevantly
When you answer a question with another one
Some people won't notice that anything was done
And then when you use a transitional device
Practically any answer given will suffice
In ordinary conversation
Speakers and hearers cooperate
All you have to do is keep in mind
All four of the Gricean norms
If you violate any of them
Then it will seem like deception
Make sure your communication has
Info in the right quantity
And be of truthful quality
Deliver appropriately
And be relevant
Dodge those questions
Captain General
Save us from facts
Do not answer
Captain General
Teach us your newspeak

Sins of the Archers
03:14
|
|||
I am constantly missing the mark
My landscape of redemption is now stark
I will never live down my mistakes
My landscape of redemption has earthquakes
People often choose who to forgive
Based on how they think someone should live
Some can only see in black and white
They think there is always wrong and right
Karma has become a female dog
No one will make room for a dialogue
Everybody stumbles now and then
Just make sure you never do it again

Double Bind
04:41
|
|||
I cannot do anything right...or so my critics say
It seems like nothing I do will ever be OK
There will always be someone who sees me as a threat
Sometimes it's a person whom I have never met
If you're playing my conscience
If things seem overblown
If there aren't correct options
Then I'll redirect it with a koan
I am often damned if I do and damned if I don't
When I choose to help someone and also when I won't
There will always be someone who doesn't like my style
Sometimes it's a person who is like what they revile
Actions can always be redefined
To put you inside of a double bind
How you choose to react to it is up to you
Statements can always be redefined
To put you inside of a double bind
How you choose to react to it is up to you

Jane Doe was in a partying mood
Tonight was not a night to be subdued
She heard about a party from a friend
And told her she'd be happy to attend
As the night lingered on
She grew tired and started to yawn
Then "Prince Charming" took her hand
It was clear that she could barely stand
Suddenly, she drifted off to sleep
And "Prince Charming" turned into a creep
After 20 minutes of action
She woke up and found out what he'd done
As her tears turned into RAINN
She feared he would try to shift the blame
And to make matters worse
He'd find many ways to asperse
The rock missed the glass ceiling again
And hit an Overton window
In the national locker room
A safe space for all assholes

Creed Clearwater Florida
03:36
|
|||
I've emptied out my whole bank account
We own the rights to the truth
I've told their members all my deepest thoughts
If you leave us, you'll be screwed
My family is no longer in my life
Now there will be no rescue
I wish I could share everything I've learned
Talk to the press and we'll sue
Just get these spirits out of me
I'll happily pay you a fee
Say what you want and I'll agree
I promise I will never flee
I'm starting to wonder why things cost so much
We own the rights to the truth
It feels like I am in the mafia
If you leave us, you'll be screwed
They sent me to work on one of their cruise ships
Now there will be no rescue
I'm now a slave who signed his life away
Talk to the press and we'll sue

Welcome to the modern world
We call it The Age of Big Data
Everything we do is tracked
Everything we feel is known
It is time for us to see
That we live inside The Metrics
Any website can be hacked
Any leader can be overthrown
It is time for all of us to feel
The force behind our new teacher, Yotta
Data and knowledge are not the same
My employer wants to know everything I do
Whether it's in context or not
The paranoid are in a candy store
Looking everywhere for razor blades
Profiling is only OK when
We are not profiling the police
It is sometimes hard to figure out
Who is on our side and who is the thug
Law enforcement wants to know everything I do
Whether I am guilty or not

Pet Shop Fashion Colorado
Coitus, pharmaceuticals, and whatever Alan Freed's ghost calls my music.
These rough
recordings are some musical ideas I've had over the years. The process is very slow because I'm doing everything on my own - guitars, drums, vocals, lyrics, recording, mixing, etc. I hope to someday record them again with a band and maybe play them live. Until then, enjoy listening to my creative process.
